Baixo Alentejo

Dry Mediterranean landscapes facing heat and water scarcity.

Baixo Alentejo, located in southern Portugal, is characterised by vast agricultural landscapes, low population density, and strong dependence on natural resources and ecosystem services. The region faces increasing climate pressures, including prolonged droughts, soil degradation, and rising temperatures, which threaten agricultural productivity, biodiversity, and rural livelihoods.
Within the GRACE project, Baixo Alentejo will act as a demonstrator region where innovative climate adaptation solutions will be co-developed and tested in close collaboration with local authorities, farmers, communities, and research partners. The region will focus on implementing nature-based solutions and sustainable land management practices that enhance water retention, soil health, and ecosystem resilience.
By combining scientific knowledge with local experience, GRACE will support stakeholders in designing adaptation pathways that strengthen community capacity and foster long-term resilience in this remote rural territory.
