Västerbotten

A northern region experiencing rapid warming and shifting winters.

Västerbotten, located in northern Sweden, is a sparsely populated region characterised by vast forests, river systems, and remote rural communities. Climate change is rapidly transforming northern landscapes, affecting ecosystems, forestry, water resources, and traditional livelihoods.
As a GRACE demonstrator region, Västerbotten will explore innovative adaptation measures that strengthen ecosystem resilience and support sustainable rural economies. The project will prioritise nature-based solutions, improved land and water management practices, and participatory approaches involving local communities and indigenous knowledge.
GRACE will help the region develop long-term strategies that enable remote rural communities to adapt to environmental change while safeguarding natural resources and cultural heritage.
